Thanks to everyone who came by to chat to us at the bunfight on Wednesday.
We will be running a taster session in the Martial Arts Studio (Level 1, SUSU) on Sunday Sept 27 at 4pm. Everyone is welcome to come along to chat, have a go, and find out more about the club.
If you can’t make the session, don’t worry, you can come along to the beginners course starting on Thursday Oct 1 at 6pm in the same place. Everyone is welcome to come and try judo with no commitment required.
Experienced players should come on down on Tuesday Sept 29 at 8pm for our main training session.
I look forward to seeing lots of new faces. Once again we have support this year from British Judo’s student discount scheme that gets you all you need to join the association and start judo at a knockdown price

As most of you probably know, the BUCS judo championships took place this weekend (19/20 March). We took 5 players along this year – Matt, Herac, Andrew, Lachlan and Nathan.
Saturday is the individual championships where Matt and Herac both fought well in the kyu grade category to both take bronze in their respective categories.
Andrew, Nathan and Lachlan had less luck. Nathan fought well to get out of his pool and into the knockout but lost to the eventual silver medallist. Andrew and Lachlan had tough draws in their pools and didn’t manage to make the knockout.
The team championships on Sunday saw a battered team presented with a tough pool. The first contest went to Plymouth who eventually finished with a bronze medal; a turnaround saw Southampton beat Bangor whose team looked strong on paper but were at a disadvantage due to only having four men.
This left the final contest in the pool to decide whether Birmingham or Southampton would go through to the knockout with Plymouth. Birmingham had in theory been fighting at a serious disadvantage with just 3 players but having defeated Bangor, they were also able to make the experience of their players count and beat us 3-2.
So the final tally for the weekend was 2 bronze medals in u73kg Kyu grade and u90kg kyu grade categories.
As usual the standard at the weekend was high, the mood of players and officials was positive, and results were spread across a wider range of universities than has often been the case.

Please try and arrive promptly to help get the mats sorted out.
On Sunday we will go and visit Solent again in St Marys.

I am back from my holiday this weekend (24 Oct), so Sunday Judo will be running as usual from 5pm-7pm.
The plan for Sundays this year is to blend working on your technique with some light randori to work on the application of techniques. The more people that come along the better it is for all of us and the session will be adjusted according to the experience of those who come along with the possibility that we work in 2 groups if appropriate.
See you all there!
