BUCS Results

March 21, 2011

As most of you probably know, the BUCS judo championships took place this weekend (19/20 March). We took 5 players along this year – Matt, Herac, Andrew, Lachlan and Nathan.

Southampton team

Saturday is the individual championships where Matt and Herac both fought well in the kyu grade category to both take bronze in their respective categories.

Herac in action in u73 knockout

Andrew, Nathan and Lachlan had less luck. Nathan fought well to get out of his pool and into the knockout but lost to the eventual silver medallist. Andrew and Lachlan had tough draws in their pools and didn’t manage to make the knockout.

The team championships on Sunday saw a battered team presented with a tough pool. The first contest went to Plymouth who eventually finished with a bronze medal; a turnaround saw Southampton beat Bangor whose team looked strong on paper but were at a disadvantage due to only having four men.

This left the final contest in the pool to decide whether Birmingham or Southampton would go through to the knockout with Plymouth. Birmingham had in theory been fighting at a serious disadvantage with just 3 players but having defeated Bangor, they were also able to make the experience of their players count and beat us 3-2.

So the final tally for the weekend was 2 bronze medals in u73kg Kyu grade and u90kg kyu grade categories.

As usual the standard at the weekend was high, the mood of players and officials was positive, and results were spread across a wider range of universities than has often been the case.

AGM – Thursday 24th March

March 9, 2011

The AGM will take place on the 24th of March, the week following BUCS. This is where we elect the new committee, who will run the club next year. The four main rolls up for grabs are:

  • Club Captain
  • Treasurer
  • Secretary
  • Social Sec

The committee needs a minimum of three people, but we can have additional positions if there are more keen people.

The committee has a few roles that it needs to fulfil throughout the year. Firstly, the organisation and attendance of the Bun Fight to bring in new freshers. This is an important start to the year, but is before the semester officially starts, so it doesn’t interfere with any work/lectures. The second is the organisation of competitions. Their are lots of events we could go to as a club, but often we only pick a few and try and get a good team together for these. Also the club needs to generate some money to keep going. This is primarily from membership, but also by filling in forms for the AU. If your good at slogging through paperwork you can get lots of money for the club! Lastly and most importantly (and probably what has lacked allot this year) are the socials. These can be as regular as you like, but are a good way to bring the club together and help create a team spirit.

There are a few little things that also happen during the year, including the refreshers fair, martial arts forum, various AU meetings etc, but these are very small in comparison to the above (which isn’t much). If you have any questions about positions, feel free to ask me, Andrew or Gary.

Please could everyone make an effort to turn up on the Thursday of the AGM. It will take place right after the session at 9.30. If you can’t make the session, could you still turn up for the AGM. We will be off to the pub afterwards for a celebratory drink.

Matt

Hampshire Closed 2011

March 6, 2011

We only had a small contingent at the Hampshire Closed today but it was a successful outing nonetheless.

Andrew fought in u81kg, having not quite got down to u73kg where he plans to fight at BUCS. Despite giving away plenty of weight to many of the other players in a pool of 5 he put together a great set of well controlled contests, winning his first 3 contests with Ippon from throws and a strangle.

The final contest of the pool was also the decider for 1st and 2nd places – Andrew started well and went ahead with a yuko score but unfortunately his opponent was injured having caught his leg while being thrown. The referees decided that too much medical attention had been needed for the injury and the fight was ended prematurely leaving Andrew the winner by default. Despite a difficult end the gold medal was well deserved after a good day’s judo.

Nathan had a more mixed day out winning one contest through a disqualification but also having good committed attacks blocked with equally good counters and came away with a bronze medal.
